We have been talking about the general “overbought” position of the market for several weeks and the using smaller positions as a way to limit risk, and it looks like we have finally have seen a temporary top put in some of the major indexes.
We have several positions that have remained profitable and might be liquidated either on a rally, or be stopped out on the 50% down rule.
We added two bearish positions on Friday in the GLD and SPY puts. Hopefully these will give us the added balance we desire. Funds in use at $6,234 is a bit over our normal exposure.
The problems developed from both a collapse in the Nikkei in addition to the rise in interest rates. Not so much the actual rate (2.18% on the 10 year) but rather the rate at which change was taking place. Rates had a range of 1.88 to 2.2% in the last several days. While 2.2 is certainly still a low rate, a move of 30 basis points is rather concerning.
The weakness in Gold, Oil, Cyclicals like Rio Tinto and Interest rate sensitive stocks (Utilities and REITs) was very concerning. These are generally we go to “hide” when the market goes negative. I believe Friday brought liquidation across all sectors.
The S&P500 put in the reversal top on 5/22 @ 1687, tested support at its last breakout @ 1635.
The attempt at a rally to new highs on 5/28 failed and after 2 days of trying to get thru that days close of 1660 broke sharply. Next support between 1610-1630 looks dubious and if that fails we are headed to 1590-1600.
